James Birbelmarsh (1847-08 March 1928) was the last Chippewa to live and die in Frankenmuth Township. He lived with his English wife in a “board and tar-paper shanty on the banks of the Cass River, about two miles downriver from Frankenmuth.” His funeral and burial took place on 10 March 1928 with Carl Nuechterlein, the local undertaker, officiating. The mourners included the family of William Zehnder, Sr.[1]
